The 2024 IEEE/IAS Power Systems Protection Prize Paper Award to Georgios Peppas and his collaborators

The paper titled “An Experimental Methodology for Modeling Surge Protective Devices: An Application to DC SPDs for Electric Vehicle Charging Stations,” co-authored by Assistant Professor Georgios Peppas and his collaborators from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), published in IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, vol. 60, pp. 1645-1655, Jan./Feb. 2024, received the 2024 IEEE/IAS Power Systems Protection Prize Paper Award.

The research paper deals with the development of an insulation coordination model, based on experimental data, aiming at the effective electrical protection of a DC fast charging station for electric vehicles, covering a wide frequency spectrum of lightning strikes, while evaluating the effectiveness of various electrical protection systems against transient events.

The research team that is awarded consists of Associate Professor Thomas Tsovilis and doctoral candidates Alexandros Hadjicostas and Evangelos Staikos from the ECE Department of AUTH and Assistant Professor Georgios Peppas from the ECE School of the Technical University of Crete. The award ceremony will take place in Las Vegas on May 19, 2024, as part of the 2024 IEEE/IAS Industrial and Commercial Power Systems Technical Conference.
