If you are a Graduate student, Postdoctoral fellow or Software developer and wish to join an exciting interdisciplinary team working in the fields of data science, machine learning and artificial intelligence, there are several contractual positions open at the MensXMachina Group in the University of Crete. Research in the group is led by Prof. Ioannis Tsamardinos having several ambitious goals and directions: (a) basic research on causal discovery, causal analysis, and causal modeling, (b) the design of automated machine learning tools and (c) predictive analytics. The successful candidates will join recently funded International and Domestic projects at the Computer Science Department of the University of Crete on Cancer Research, Biomedicine, IoTs and others.
Regarding our group
Our group is a highly multi-disciplinary (including researchers with applied math, computer science, engineering, biology and signal processing backgrounds) and multi-national team of more than 15 undergraduates, graduate students, post-docs and researchers. We focus on data analysis and machine learning with an emphasis on biomedical data and problems inspired by biological research. We maintain numerous national and international collaborations with biology and medical groups in synergistic, funded research programs. In addition, we have experience with commercialization of our novel methods. Our group has attracted more than 4M euro in last 5 years in European, Greek national, and international research grants.
Jobs Description
We are looking for motivated people to join our effort in achieving fundamental scientific breakthroughs in Machine Learning and AI. All applicants should have a strong algorithmic and mathematical background and they should be able to work well as parts of a multi-disciplinary team and have excellent communication skills in English. All applicants should have a degree in a related field, such as computer science, engineering, statistics, applied mathematics or bioinformatics. Experience with analysis of biological data and analysis of high dimensional data is a plus. There are several open positions for:
Post-Doc Researcher. The applicant must have a Ph.D. in one of these research directions and a strong publication record. Experience with algorithms, methods and analyses on at least one of the following is required: machine learning, data mining, (computational) statistics, pattern recognition and data science in general. Experience with designing and executing research plans will be considered a plus.
PhD Candidate in Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence/Causal Discovery. The applicant must have a Master’s degree (M.Sc.) in areas such as Machine Learning, Relational Learning, Representation Learning, Multivariate Statistics and learning in Big Data settings.
Scientific Programmer. The applicant should have experience in programming Machine Learning or AI algorithms. Optimizing scientific algorithms and computations as well as cloud computing will be considered a plus.
We welcome application from international applicants. Fluency in English is necessary; no knowledge of Greek is required. Greek males applying for the positions should have either fulfilled their military obligations or have secured postponement until the end of the contract.
Compensation is extremely competitive for the Greek cost of living (~12K - 26K Euros gross salary, depending on position and skills).
Location
University of Crete is located near Heraklion, the 4th largest city in Greece on the coast of the island of Crete. The location is ideal for people who enjoy sunny weather and aquatic activities, or are attracted by the history and archeological sites of the island. The Computer Science Department, who will host the research activities, is sited in new buildings and research facilities completed in 2013.
The contracts should ideally start on September 2019 or within a few months. Later start dates are possible if agreed up with the Principal Investigator.
