Title

Antennas in Body-centric Wireless Communications

Abstract

Antenna engineering has been dynamically oriented towards the remote accessibility of the implantable medical devices (IMDs). Wireless medical telemetry may nurture an improved life quality and diminish the concern of an urgent medical disorder via the distant patient state supervision. Miniature antennas can be integrated into IMDs to communicate with an external control base station and wirelessly transmit vital signs (e.g., cardiac beat, blood pressure, and body temperature). The issue of the power supply, also, arises due to the long-term use of the implantable apparatuses. Wireless power transfer may negate the need of the repeated surgeries and eliminate potential health issues.

Furthermore, within the framework of wireless body-area networks, wearable antennas can be applied to improve the personal and professional life routine in applications such as health monitoring, military, and rescue services. On-body and off-body wireless channels can be established allowing communication between a wearable antenna and body-mounted apparatus or between the antenna and external nodes, respectively. Upon the enhancement of wearable system performance, antenna reconfigurable properties seem to be beneficial.

About the speaker

Sofia Bakogianni received the Diploma degree in electrical and computer engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, Athens, Greece, in 2007, the M.Sc. degree in microelectronics-optoelectronics from the University of Crete, Heraklion, Greece, in 2010, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer science from the University of Patras, Patras, Greece, in 2018. She has authored or co-authored more than 20 journal and conference papers. Her research interests include antenna theory and design, implantable antennas, wearable antennas, RF/microwave circuits, wireless power transfer, and electromagnetics. She  was a recipient of National Award and Scholarships. She serves as a reviewer at the IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, the IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters, and at various international conferences.
